If I Was a Tony Voter...

Ok so the Tonys don't always get everything right. But I pretty much do. So here's what the nominees and winners would look like if I was deciding the Tonys (which my friends and readers have repeatedly reminded me I'm not).  And before we get into the is-it-or-isn't-it debate for certain shows, I've used the Tony rulings for category placement and number of nominees per category. Sadly, even in my perfect world there wasn't room for everyone in such a packed year. Sorry Denzel. So put on your favorite cast album, give it a read, and then send me angry letters about who didn't make it. =)

Special Award
Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. For creating the most delightful on-stage pairing of the season in Waiting for Godot. Neither character would be able to stand alone without the other.  Note to other actors out there: this is what chemistry and specificity looks like.

Special Shout Out
Brian J. Smith's Pecs and Abs. Thank you...for just being you. Just thank you.

Off-Broadway
There are too many shows that premiere Off-Broadway for me to catch all of them, or really even the majority. Money and time simply don't allow. But I'd like to give a shout out to some stunning Off-Broadway work that deserves recognition. So, in no particular order:
Fun Home
Here Lies Love
Murder For Two
Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
The Night Alive
Domesticated

I was very surprised to find that when I had selected my winners, they were relatively spread out among the nominees. It was certainly not by design, but I think it speaks to the wide variety of offerings this season.
